When we think “Sarasota” we generally think of the unique arts scene, beautiful beaches and plentiful sunshine. We don’t often think “homelessness.” But Adam Tebrugge, our July luncheon speaker, says that homelessness is a significant problem in our area.

Tebrugge, Chairman of the Board of the Suncoast Partnership to End Homelessness, quotes statistics that may surprise you. Did you know there were more than 900 homeless school children in Sarasota this past school year? And that more than 23,000 people in Manatee and Sarasota counties received services in 2010 to relieve or prevent homelessness?

The numbers tell a story we need to hear. For almost half the homeless (45%), this isn’t a short-term problem; they’ve been homeless for more than a year. And the homeless didn’t move to the area for free services; 78% have lived in our community for a year or longer.

Tebrugge is a native Floridian and a graduate of New College and the Florida State University College of Law. He joined the Public Defender’s Office for the 12th Judicial Circuit directly from law school and spent the next 23 years litigating all types of criminal cases, eventually becoming the chief trial attorney in the homicide division.

A candidate for Circuit Court Judge in 2002, Tebrugge ran for Public Defender in 2008. He won a majority of the vote in Sarasota and DeSoto counties, but lost the election by one-half of one percent. He is now in private practice, handling serious criminal defense and appeals.

Tebrugge is married to attorney and teacher, Regina Tebrugge. He has two grown step-children.

Please join us at the Sarasota Yacht Club on Sat., July 9 to hear Adam Tebrugge tell us what we need to do to end homelessness in Sarasota. You will be pleased to learn about the Suncoast Partnership’s successes.

Where are you on Friday evenings at 8:30? Many of us are watching Rob Lorei, our March luncheon speaker, on WEDU-TV (Ch. 3) as he moderates “Florida This Week,” the most informative television program on Florida politics. Lorei’s panelists include journalists and academics like Jeremy Wallace and Frank Alcock, prominent Democrats like Keith Fitzgerald and Rita Ferrandino and area Republicans. But, unlike other panels with activists from opposing parties, there’s no shouting. With Lorei at the helm, the discussion stays on an even keel.

Lorei will speak to the Democratic Club of Sarasota on March 12 on the topic “The Conservative Assault on Public Broadcasting.” The U.S. House of Representatives recently voted to eliminate funding for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, the organization responsible for distributing federal funds that support 1300 local public broadcasting stations. Conservatives have been quick to encourage these cuts because of the perception that public broadcasting often slants to the left. We look forward to hearing Rob Lorei’s insight on this topic.

Besides serving as the Managing Editor and moderator of “Florida This Week,” Lorei is a co-founder of WMNF Radio and is currently the station’s News and Public Affairs Director. He attended Antioch College where he received a BA in Journalism in 1977. He got his start in radio there as a news reporter at the campus NPR station, WYSO. Lorei has covered local politics for more than 20 years and has moderated numerous televised political debates. He has received awards for reporting from the Florida ACLU, the Sierra Club, Amnesty International, the Sarasota Coalition for Peace and Justice, and the Florida Consumer Action Network. Please join us on Saturday, March 12, for what promises to be a thought-provoking presentation.

During the first half of the 20th century, Newtown (and Overtown before it) had a thriving business community. What happened?

Two things. As desegregation spread, minority consumers were attracted to shops where they hadn’t been welcome before. At the same time, chains were putting “mom & pop stores” out of business — in both the black and white communities. But the chains rarely invested in minority communities. While we now expect to see a Walgreens at every major intersection and several Publix stores near our homes, the closest supermarket to Newtown, the north Trail Winn-Dixie, is closing. Without a thriving business community, consumers have limited access to goods and services and workers have few job opportunities.

How can we address this problem (which is not unique to Sarasota, or Florida)? Our November speaker has some answers.

Al Piña is Chair of the Florida Minority Community Reinvestment Coalition and President of Urban Redevelopment Solutions, Inc. Piña cites statistics showing that untapped potential for economic growth exists in minority communities. Tapping this potential would significantly enhance Florida’s overall economy. He will present a framework for analyzing Florida’s minority markets, and discuss a community economic development tool to integrate inner city assets (including consumption and labor) into the local  and regional economy.

Al Piña is an urban community economic development professional in the field of community economic development in minority communities. He uses his extensive for-profit corporate experience to offer market-based arguments for investing in neglected areas.

Join us on Sat., Nov. 13 to learn more about how Democrats can encourage business investment in minority markets and grow Florida’s economy.

On September 11, 2010 the Democratic Club of Sarasota is pleased to welcome back Representative Keith Fitzgerald as our guest speaker. Always a favorite of Sarasota Democrats, Keith will share his insight on the challenges facing Democrats in Tallahassee and provide an update on his campaign.

Keith was first elected to represent State House District 69 in 2006. His district includes the northern half of Sarasota County and a small portion of Manatee County.

As a Ph.D. in political science, he has studied politics his whole life, taught at colleges and universities and conducted scholarly research. Prior to his election, Keith’s leadership positions included service on the Advisory Council of Faculty Senates, the Board of Trustees of New College of Florida and the Sarasota City Charter Review Board.

During his time in office, Keith has fought for issues such as affordable housing, election reform, smart growth and environmental conservation. Keith serves on the Economic Expansion and Infrastructure Council and the Environmental Protection Committee and is the Democratic Ranking Member on the Ethics and Elections Committee. Keith was also appointed Deputy Policy Chair for the House Democratic Caucus, giving him a central role in shaping the caucus’s policy agenda.

Born in Springfield, OH and raised in Louisville, KY, Keith holds a B.A. from the University of Louisville, and a Ph.D. from Indiana University. Keith has lived in Sarasota and taught political science at New College of Florida since 1994.
