In spite of a resounding defeat in last year’s presidential election, the Republican Party continues to push legislation that impinges on women’s rights.

At our July luncheon, we look forward to hearing from Jan Chester, Planned Parenthood Vice President of External Affairs, speaking about these issues and how healthcare reform is impacting Planned Parenthoods work on a state and national level.

Wednesday, May 22nd – Wine, Cheese & Politics – Phil Kellerman – Untangling Immigration

Join us as we welcome Phil Kellerman, an advocate for migrant farm workers and their families since 1989, addressing the proposed immigration bill that seeks to deal with the estimated 10 million undocumented persons residing in the United States and to change regulations for those who want to legally come to the U.S. What is in the bill? What is it going to take for an undocumented individual to become a citizen? Is the bill fair? What will it mean for businesses dependent on immigrant labor? And, what about high school graduates who are still not legal citizens? How does the bill help them? Thanks to an inheritance from his grandmother, Dr. Helen Zand, Phil established the Harvest of Hope Foundation in 1997 in Oneonta, New York. Based now in Gainesville, Florida, the foundation has distributed more than 1 million dollars in aid to field workers and their families across the country. Financial assistance is provided for vehicle repairs due to breakdowns, housing, utilities, rent, medical services, food, clothes, and funeral expenses. Educational aid is given to children of migrant farm workers who are attending college.

Cheese, desserts, wine, beer, and other beverages will be served. Please note that RESERVATIONS ARE REQUIRED. We are now limited to 50 attendees at this venue. Once you have made a reservation, if you are unable to attend, we request that you let us know by May 20th, so we can fill your spot.

Join us as we welcome Joe Saunders, Florida House of Representatives, District 49. Representative Saunders will provide an update on the legislative session that ends in early May. He is the former Statewide Field Director for Equality Florida and one of the two first openly gay elected officials to the Florida legislature.

Saturday, March 9th Luncheon – Democratic Sarasota City Commission Candidates at the Sarasota Yacht Club

With the presidential election behind us and the Florida gubernatorial election still ahead, Sarasota County is turning its attention to the City Commission race. This year there are two At-Large seats up for election on March 12th. At-large seats represent the whole city and are voted on by all registered voters in the city. The two At-Large seats are currently held by Mayor Suzanne Atwell and Commissioner Terry Turner. Terry is not seeking re-election, but Democrat Suzanne Atwell is.

There are a total of six candidates running for these two seats. Three of them are Democrats and will be featured at our March 9th luncheon at the Sarasota Yacht Club. Please join us as we welcome incumbent Mayor Suzanne Atwell, along with Susan Chapman, and Linda Holland.

The program will be moderated by WSRQ Talk Radio’s Susan Nilon, who has been closely following the race on her radio show and has moderated other events with the candidates. Please note that this month’s luncheon will be held at the Sarasota Yacht Club.

Please join fellow Democrats for a FREE Presidents Day Celebration at Tequila Cantina at 1454 Main Street, Sarasota, Monday, February 18th. Presidents Day gives us another occasion to celebrate President Obama’s victory, while honoring George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. Cake will be provided, along with appetizers from our generous friends at Tequila Cantina.

Appetizers include nachos, tacos, and quesadillas. Additional Happy Hour appetizers are available for just $5, along with $3 Happy Hour drinks, that include Chilean wine, beer, margarita’s, and well drinks.

Saturday, February 9th Luncheon – Rich Roberts—IUPA— “Gun Control—Rational Solutions Amidst Irrational Arguments”

Rich Roberts, a Democrat and member of the Club, has enjoyed a long career in law enforcement, public safety policy, and security consulting. He is currently the Director of Special Operations and Public Information Officer for the International Union of Police Associations, AFL-CIO (IUPA) who are headquartered in Sarasota.

In the wake of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shootings in Newtown, IUPA issued a policy paper cautioning the people making suggestions and recommendations in reaction to the Newtown school shootings, to avoid a counterproductive emphasis on gun control in favor of more effective measures.

The union, which represents rank and file police officers across the country, warned that what they referred to as the “growing and rancorous debate over gun control” will distract from more immediate and practical actions. The report states clearly, “We need to be wary of ‘simple’ solutions to such events and the ‘bumper sticker’ rhetoric so pervasive on both sides.”

Please join us on February 9th, to hear Mr. Roberts expand on the ideas presented by IUPA and his reactions to the recommendations of Vice President Biden’s task force. Mr. Roberts view on this topic as a veteran of law enforcement may challenge our perspective and will certainly lead to a great question/answer session.

Saturday, January 12th Luncheon – Barbara Ford-Coates on the REAL ID Act, Drivers Licenses & How it Affects You

Join us on Saturday, January 12th, as we welcome Sarasota County Tax Collector Barbara Ford-Coates to educate us on the reality Floridians face as the REAL ID law is fully implemented. She will provide us with details on why the law was passed and who it impacts, as well as how, when, and where Floridians must comply. With local governments facing the many challenges of implementation, she will share what her office is doing to make compliance as painless as possible.

A native of Virginia, Barbara Ford-Coates has lived in Sarasota County since 1972. She joined the Tax Collector’s office in 1975. She was first elected to the top position in 1984 and re-elected in 1996, 2000, 2004, 2008, and 2012 without opposition. She is the longest serving Sarasota County elected official and the recipient of the2008 Outstanding County Tax Collector in the United States award. She is a Democrat who is active with the League of Women Voters, on the board of the Community Foundation, and is a Girl Scout Troop leader.
