“Women Are Watching” is the title of Barbara Zdravecky’s presentation at the Democratic Club of Sarasota’s September luncheon. As President and CEO of the local Planned Parenthood, Zdravecky is especially qualified to discuss women’s health and human rights issues from a political perspective. But, with women comprising over 53% of Sarasota County registered voters, the title “Women are Watching” should also be seen as a warning to any politician who ignores women’s needs.

Barbara Zdravecky has been President and CEO of Planned Parenthood of Southwest and Central Florida (PPSWCF) for more than 17 years. In 2006, she was honored with the Ruth Green Award as the top Planned Parenthood CEO in the country by Planned Parenthood Federation of America. Locally, she has been recognized for her ability to “rally and inspire area residents” (SRQ Magazine, 2009) and to attract “leaders and politicians to her cause through charm and total conviction” (Sarasota Magazine, 2007).

During Barbara’s tenure, PPSWCF has seen phenomenal growth and expansion, providing thousands of women and families with reproductive health care services and information. Planned Parenthood now serves more than 26,000 patients at its seven health centers in Southwest and Central Florida, including its new 23,000-square-foot regional headquarters in downtown Sarasota, which opened in December, 2008, and features a state-of-the-art health center.

Come to the luncheon on Saturday, September 10 to learn more about some of the challenges facing women in America today.

July 30, 2011

Sarasota Democratic Club Members and Guests:

My partners –  Lauren Rudd, Kent Kirschner, and I would like to thank everyone who attended last Thursday’s evening of Wine, Cheese, and Politics, sponsored by the Democratic Club of Sarasota.  It was wonderful to see so many people come out to hear what we had to say.

We are very aware of how each of us can impact what goes out over the airwaves and how it can define who we are as a people.  Too long we have stood back and let others speak for us.  Now it is time that we must speak for ourselves.

Please join us in helping your voice be heard, here in Sarasota.  Whether it’s tuning in and telling your friends about us; calling into our programs and participating in our discussions or suggesting guests; supporting our advertisers and letting them know you heard them on our station; or enlisting your company to become one of our promotional partners – all will help us make a difference in our community.

We believe in the voice of our community.  We believe in the people of this community.  We want people to hear what you have to say. On August 8th, 2011 – we will be launching our programs:  “The Rudd Report” at 4pm and “The Nilon Report” at 5pm weekdays on both 106.9FM and 1220AM.  We hope you will tune in.

If you want to contact us for any reason, please reach out to us at:

This month’s discussion will feature Susan Nilon and Lauren Rudd of Sarasota Talk Radio along with Kent Kirschner of Media Maquiladora. The panel, who are new partners in the acquisition of local radio station WSRQ, will talk about the role of the media in the 2012 election. With the campaign season already in progress, we know how much the media can influence not only the message, but also the vote.  Join us to talk about how we can help shape the message and determine what information is truth and what is just political spin.

Beer, wine, and light bites will be provided. The event will be held at 1350 Main Street, 6th Floor, Sarasota, FL at 6:30 p.m. Doors open at 6 p.m. The cost is $10 for Club Members, $15 for Non-Members. RSVP by e-mailing rsvp@sarasotadems.com or by calling 941-379-9233. Walk-in’s welcome.

Better Living Through Chemistry? Like many company slogans, DuPont’s message from 1935 to 1982 was not entirely true. CFCs invented by DuPont made aerosol sprays possible, but helped cause climate change by depleting the ozone layer. DuPont’s Teflon makes cooking easier, but releases harmful chemicals when subjected to high temperatures.

In response to concern about hazardous chemicals, the Toxic Substance Control Act of 1976 empowered the Environmental Protection Agency to locate and regulate toxic chemicals. But, with more than 84,000 chemicals in use in the U.S., few are tested before they are found to be harmful. The Safe Chemicals Act of 2011 (s.847), introduced by Senator Lautenberg (D-NJ), would put the burden on industry to prove that chemicals are safe. If passed, the act would also promote “green” chemistry.

On Saturday, August 13, Ed Rosenthal will speak in support of the Safe Chemicals Act and of APP=Advocate Precautionary Principle, a movement to put chemical safety first.

Rosenthal is the ideal individual to speak about the Safe Chemicals Act because, as founder and CEO of Florikan ESA Corp., a local “green” industry, he embodies the ideal of developing safe, environmentally-sustainable replacements for harmful chemicals. Under Rosenthal’s leadership, Florikan helped reduce Red Tide in local waters by developing a zero-nitrogen, zero-phosphorus fertilizer and advocating for sensible landscaping practices. Rosenthal and Florikan received the 2008 Gulf Guardian Award for this. Click here to watch an informative video about the Gulf Guardian Award and the reduction of Red Tide.

Ed Rosenthal holds two US patents for the development for time release fertilizer which reduces the potential amount of nutrient runoff into the environment. Rosenthal and his wife Betty have lived in Sarasota County for 35 years.

Come to the August 13 luncheon at Laurel Oak Country Club to learn how important it is to the health of America’s children for Congress to pass the Safe Chemicals Act.

When we think “Sarasota” we generally think of the unique arts scene, beautiful beaches and plentiful sunshine. We don’t often think “homelessness.” But Adam Tebrugge, our July luncheon speaker, says that homelessness is a significant problem in our area.

Tebrugge, Chairman of the Board of the Suncoast Partnership to End Homelessness, quotes statistics that may surprise you. Did you know there were more than 900 homeless school children in Sarasota this past school year? And that more than 23,000 people in Manatee and Sarasota counties received services in 2010 to relieve or prevent homelessness?

The numbers tell a story we need to hear. For almost half the homeless (45%), this isn’t a short-term problem; they’ve been homeless for more than a year. And the homeless didn’t move to the area for free services; 78% have lived in our community for a year or longer.

Tebrugge is a native Floridian and a graduate of New College and the Florida State University College of Law. He joined the Public Defender’s Office for the 12th Judicial Circuit directly from law school and spent the next 23 years litigating all types of criminal cases, eventually becoming the chief trial attorney in the homicide division.

A candidate for Circuit Court Judge in 2002, Tebrugge ran for Public Defender in 2008. He won a majority of the vote in Sarasota and DeSoto counties, but lost the election by one-half of one percent. He is now in private practice, handling serious criminal defense and appeals.

Tebrugge is married to attorney and teacher, Regina Tebrugge. He has two grown step-children.

Please join us at the Sarasota Yacht Club on Sat., July 9 to hear Adam Tebrugge tell us what we need to do to end homelessness in Sarasota. You will be pleased to learn about the Suncoast Partnership’s successes.
