August 13th Luncheon: “Green” Entrepeneur Ed Rosenthal on Preventing Sale of Unsafe Chemical in U.S.
Better Living Through Chemistry? Like many company slogans, DuPont’s message from 1935 to 1982 was not entirely true. CFCs invented by DuPont made aerosol sprays possible, but helped cause climate change by depleting the ozone layer. DuPont’s Teflon makes cooking easier, but releases harmful chemicals when subjected to high temperatures.
In response to concern about hazardous chemicals, the Toxic Substance Control Act of 1976 empowered the Environmental Protection Agency to locate and regulate toxic chemicals. But, with more than 84,000 chemicals in use in the U.S., few are tested before they are found to be harmful. The Safe Chemicals Act of 2011 (s.847), introduced by Senator Lautenberg (D-NJ), would put the burden on industry to prove that chemicals are safe. If passed, the act would also promote “green” chemistry.
On Saturday, August 13, Ed Rosenthal will speak in support of the Safe Chemicals Act and of APP=Advocate Precautionary Principle, a movement to put chemical safety first.
Rosenthal is the ideal individual to speak about the Safe Chemicals Act because, as founder and CEO of Florikan ESA Corp., a local “green” industry, he embodies the ideal of developing safe, environmentally-sustainable replacements for harmful chemicals. Under Rosenthal’s leadership, Florikan helped reduce Red Tide in local waters by developing a zero-nitrogen, zero-phosphorus fertilizer and advocating for sensible landscaping practices. Rosenthal and Florikan received the 2008 Gulf Guardian Award for this. Click here to watch an informative video about the Gulf Guardian Award and the reduction of Red Tide.
Ed Rosenthal holds two US patents for the development for time release fertilizer which reduces the potential amount of nutrient runoff into the environment. Rosenthal and his wife Betty have lived in Sarasota County for 35 years.
Come to the August 13 luncheon at Laurel Oak Country Club to learn how important it is to the health of America’s children for Congress to pass the Safe Chemicals Act.
