Wednesday, August 22 – wine, cheese & politics – Robert Hackney – Can Florida Survive Rick Scott?

There’s good news for Democrats in Sarasota County. Not only do we have a radio station owned by Democrats (WSRQ 107.9 FM, 1450 AM), we are now welcoming a progressive online publication that will publish its first full, self-contained edition on September 7, 2012.

Founded by Rachel Brown Hackney, former Pelican Press editor, The Sarasota News Leader, calls itself “the progressive voice of Southwest Florida.” Due to the Observer Group’s cuts at the Pelican Press and the Herald-Tribune’s buyout of Creative Loafing, the journalists involved in this new effort feel that progressive views were no longer represented in local Sarasota media. Its seasoned staff of award-winning journalists will provide in-depth reporting on local governments and the major issues affecting Sarasota County, including extensive coverage of the Arts & Entertainment scene, and a comprehensive calendar of community events.

The event is at 1350 Main Street, 6th Floor, Downtown Sarasota at 6:30 p.m. Wine, beer, and non-alcoholic beverages will be provided along with light bites and dessert.

RESERVATIONS ARE REQUIRED! Please e-mail rsvp@sarasotadems.com or leave a message at 404-4678. Reservastions will close when venue capacity has been reached. Walk-ins not accepted.

Cost for members is $15 and for non-members, $20. Payment can be prepaid by mailing a check made payable to the DCS to: PO Box 51076, Sarasota, FL 34232 or at the door the night of the event. Please fill out checks ahead of time made payable to the DCS.
