Wednesday, September 18th – Movie Event – Bill Moyers “The United States of ALEC” followed by remarks from Susan Smith, President of the Democratic Progressive Caucus of FL
Join us on Wednesday evening, September 18th, as we screen the compelling Bill Moyers documentary, “The United States of ALEC”. The American Legislative Exchange Council describes itself as the nations largest, non-partisan, individual-public private membership association of state legislators. A more accurate description is that they are a vast network of corporate lobbying and political action aimed to increase corporate profits at public expense without public knowledge. ALEC brings corporations together to draft model legislation that is then handed out by the legislators in statehouses across the country, ultimately allowing corporations to drive policy and lawmaking.
The documentary is packed with material about ALEC’s operating methods and relies heavily upon the research and reporting of CMD’s award-winning “ALEC Exposed” project. The program features interviews with CMD Executive Director Lisa Graves, Deputy Director Mary Bottari and Director of Research Nick Surgey. Madisonians John Nichols of the Nation, U.S. Rep. Mark Pocan and University of Wisconsin professors Joel Rogers and Julie Underwood are also interviewed about the expansive ALEC agenda.
Screening of the film will be followed by remarks from Susan Smith, President of the Democratic Progressive Caucus of Florida. Susan is well-versed on ALEC’s operations and influence across the country and in Florida. She will provide an up-to-the-minute update on what ALEC is doing now.
Wine, beer, soft beverages, and light bites and sweets will be provided.
