Thursday, April 5th Wine, Cheese & Politics with Jerry Springer
We all know Jerry as the host of the daytime talk show, The Jerry Springer Show. But his resume also includes actor, television news anchor, and yes — progressive political activist and former elected official! Making his third appearance at a Democratic Club of Sarasota event, on our Thursday April 5th Wine, Cheese & Politics, Jerry will share his thoughts on The idea of America … Do we still believe?
Jerry has been involved in politics since he graduated from Northwestern University Law School in 1968. The Sarasota resident began his activism with the Robert Kennedy campaign and continues to be engaged today.
As a young lawyer, he led the movement in Ohio to lower the voting age from 21 to 18, which resulted in his Senate Judiciary Committee testimony supporting ratification of the 26th Amendment to the Constitution. Springer then ran for Congress in Ohio in 1970, almost beating the Republican incumbent, Donald Clancy. In 1971, he won a seat on the Cincinnati City Council and served five terms before becoming mayor at the age of 33, with the largest plurality in the city’s history.
After an unsuccessful bid for governor of Ohio in 1982, he was courted by several networks, ultimately signing with the Cincinnati NBC affiliate WLWT. As its anchor and managing editor, he won multiple Emmy Awards. He has appeared in several films and TV shows, both in the states and in England.
Springer hosts a podcast which addresses current events, sharing his insights and reactions to current events. A frequent guest and political commentator on CNN and other news networks, we have no doubt that Jerry will provide a thought-provoking and entertaining evening of political conversation.
Beer, wine, soft drinks, and light bites will be served. The $45 / $55 admission fee will help us raise much needed funds; as well as cover the rental cost of the venue, food and beverages, and will allow the Club to comp students and other deserving members of our community.
