Democratic Club of Sarasota has supported important local nonprofit initiatives for several years through our Democrats Care program. This year, we have selected a local organization that addresses a broader national challenge– the very existence of women’s health and welfare and their reproductive rights.
We have chosen Planned Parenthood of Southwest & Central Florida (PPSWCF) as our sole beneficiary for the Club’s 2021 “Democrats Care” fundraising effort. We will match donations (up to $100) made to Democratic Club received now through October 23, 2021 for Planned Parenthood. See 2 ways to donate below.
A trailblazer in the Florida State Legislature, Congresswoman Lois Frankel served as the first woman Democratic minority leader. She became a leading force to improve the economic condition of families and seniors and protect human rights and women’s reproductive freedom – fights she continues today in Congress as co-chair of the Democratic Women’s Caucus.
Rep. Frankel has spent her lifetime delivering positive change to her community as a civic leader, state legislator, mayor, and now Member of the United States House of Representatives where she sits on the House Appropriations Committee and House Committee on Veteran’s Affairs. Prior to her election to Congress, Rep. Frankel served as Mayor of West Palm Beach, raising her city to a new vitality and earning a reputation as an innovative problem-solver.
Donations for Planned Parenthood can be made anytime between now and October 23, 2021, and we’ll be asking for contributions during the special meeting.

More information: The dreadful new law in Texas effectively bans most abortions after about six weeks of pregnancy, well before many women even know they are pregnant. Even worse, the law establishes a kind of bounty system encouraging vigilantes. In light of the US Supreme Court’s recent ruling on the Texas abortion statute, the majority of the Manatee County Commissioners are pushing for a similar ban at the county level.
But it does not stop there. Florida and other states are already planning to use the TX law as a blueprint here. We cannot let that happen. That is why this event is so critical.
