Florida Representative Michele Rayner (D-District 70) will join a special co-sponsored Legislative Update presented by the Democratic Club of Sarasota and the Sarasota Democratic Black Caucus via Zoom. She will provide some insight into major legislation that was introduced during the Florida Congressional session: what passed or failed, what was sponsored by whom and her personal experience in Tallahassee since being elected in 2020.
House District 70 encompasses neighborhoods in Sarasota, Hillsborough, Manatee and Pinellas Counties. A civil rights attorney and social justice advocate, Rep. Rayner proudly campaigned and won as the first openly queer black woman elected to the Florida Legislature. Originally from Clearwater and founder of Civil Liberty Law, she has served as a legislative assistant, Democratic Party field organizer and director, and assistant public defender in the state’s Sixth Judicial Circuit. She was also the local counsel of the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund.
Living in St. Pete, Rep. Rayner is a graduate of Florida Coastal School of Law and Florida State University. She currently serves on the Health & Human Services Committee and on Subcommittees for Professions & Public Health, Justice Appropriations and Insurance and Banking, as well as a Joint Select Committee on Collective Bargaining. She is happily married to her wife Bianca Goolsby.
